Small Qingdao Island, Qingdao

4.2
#3 of 10 in Nature in Qingdao
Island Nature / Park
Stroll around Small Qingdao Island and feel the light ocean breeze carrying scents of peaches, Oriental cherries, roses, pomegranates, and hibiscus. From the air, the small island resembles the ancient Chinese "qin" instrument with its long, narrow shape. See waves crashing over jagged rocks and relax with a cup of coffee in one the cafes. Look out for the island's white marble lighthouse, which stands 15.5 m (51 ft) tall and signals ships entering the harbor. Climb to the pavilion for nice ocean views, and see if you can spot the rusty submarine, whose tip peeks out from the sea. Top your island experience off with a visit to the naval museum. Where to stay in Qingdao

For upmarket, high-rise hotels in Qingdao, look at the area to the east of the center, largely revamped in time for the 2008 Olympics. Here, skyscraper chain hotels jostle for position on the main streets, offering sea views and a wealth of additional facilities, while humbler options sit on the side streets, offering more basic lodgings, but still in new blocks. To the west, the more historic districts have a good set of hostels, hotels, and guesthouses to suit a wide range of budgets and tastes.

  • This was a lovely walk across the causeway and around the island. Well worth the very small entrance fee and great views across the harbour.  more »
