May Fourth Square, Qingdao

4.0
In the middle of the city's central business district, May Fourth Square lies between municipal government quarters and Fushan Bay. Delight in a lazy stroll around the square, enjoying the refreshing breeze off the glittering Yellow Sea. The centerpiece of this area, the eye-catching "Winds of May" commemorative sculpture injects a bright burst of crimson into the square's landscape, considered a symbol of the city's bright future. A very scenic area by day with a lively atmosphere, lots of hawkers and stalls along the promenade where you can buy many trinkets with a mall south of this location and a few restaurants through out. May Fourth Square has the must see Winds of May sculpture at its heart which is a red 700 ton metal sculpture modelled after a gust of wind. I definitely recommend coming back to the square in the evening to see the Winds of May lit up against the city skyline. There is also a stunning view of Fushan bay and the Qingdao Olympic Sailing Center if you walk just past the Winds of May towards the coast.

While being a landmark of Qingdao, during the day its just a monument. However, the area looks stunning at night - with the monument lit up and modern buildings in the background, the area deserves a handful of night view photos!

Where to stay in Qingdao

For upmarket, high-rise hotels in Qingdao, look at the area to the east of the center, largely revamped in time for the 2008 Olympics. Here, skyscraper chain hotels jostle for position on the main streets, offering sea views and a wealth of additional facilities, while humbler options sit on the side streets, offering more basic lodgings, but still in new blocks. To the west, the more historic districts have a good set of hostels, hotels, and guesthouses to suit a wide range of budgets and tastes.
