City Wall of Pingyao, Pingyao County
(4.1/5 based on 260+ reviews on the web)
Marvel at the engineering, history, and scale of City Wall of Pingyao, one of the best preserved structures of its kind in the country, and part of a wider UNESCO World Heritage Site. Dating back to 1370, the wall remains remarkably well intact, with six grand barbican gates and four main towers at its ends. The wall also features 72 watchtowers and more than 3,000 battlements, with those two numbers said to represent the 72 people of great wisdom in contemporary belief, and the 3,000 disciples of Confucius. With a total length of 6 km (4 mi), a height of 12 m (40 ft), and between 3 and 6 m (10-20 ft) wide, the impressively engineered structure acts as a powerful emblem of the city and its history. • Arguably the best way to see Pingyao - from above! Worth the RMB 130 pp. You can peek into many courtyards still inhabited by the local population, some restored, some not.
  • Beautiful preserved city wall; be careful of very low walls on the inside occasionally, especially with kids ... manageable size to spend a few hours circling the city.
  • Pingyao, walk on the ramparts is a must. We must depart from the entrance because then you can walk alone and do all the way around (4km) or a part. Nice view on the city and the old houses of Pingyao.
