Ancient City of Pingyao, Pingyao County
(4.3/5 based on 1,000+ reviews on the web)
Get a glimpse of the nation's architectural past at the UNESCO-protected Ancient City of Pingyao, one of the country's best-preserved imperial-era towns. Founded during the 14th century, the complex features traditional homes and streets typical of the Ming dynasty. Explore this historic neighborhood to find almost 4,000 preserved buildings, many of which feature a setup of outer gates and inner courtyards. Grab some street food from the stalls along the main streets, or pick up a handmade souvenir as a memento of your trip. Don't miss the massive city wall, either; perhaps the crowning glory of the site, the wall stands nearly 10 m (33 ft) high and has a thickness of 5 m (16.4 ft) in some places, as it wraps its way for more than 6.1 km (3.8 mi) around the city. Our Pingyao County vacation builder makes visiting Ancient City of Pingyao and other Pingyao County attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

  • A succession of Chinese, very beautiful, traditional houses and shops where you can access several of them to see them. There is a central part closed to the traffic, where there are no cars

  • I loved the low houses and the ancient atmosphere inside the city walls. Every house is (restored) as it was so many centuries ago and there are no modern lightpoles in the town, only smaller lamps at...  more »
  • From our courtyard-hotel within the city walls, we explored the town. On internet we had read that this would be a particular Chinese village and indeed: beautiful. We started on the city walls, 6 km long and fine. You can see from above how old and authentic it is (and the poor conditions ....) Then some old buildings and temples. The shopping streets are very busy but cosy; in the evening, everything is illuminated with lanterns. Recommended!!
