The Baoguo Temple is a Mahayana Buddhist temple located in the Jiangbei district, 15km north of Ningbo, in Zhejiang Province, People's Republic of China. It is noted as the second oldest surviving wooden structure in southern China since the main hall of the present temple dates back to 1013 AD during The Northern Song Dynasty.HistoryThe temple was originally called the Lingshan Temple, but in 880 AD, during the Tang Dynasty it was renamed the Baoguo Temple. The main hall was rebuilt in 1013 AD, during the Northern Song dynasty, and is one of the oldest and most well preserved wooden constructions in China. The temple also contains columns dating to the Tang Dynasty, a hall built during the Ming Dynasty, and two halls and towers of the Qing Dynasty.Today the temple is a tourist attraction, and many of its rooms and halls are used to house various exhibitions, including: Guanyin statuesConfucian bronzesNingbo furnitureTraditional Chinese wedding attireCarved stone screensMiscellaneous architectural pieces from the temple compoundFamous places around ChinaTransportThe temple can be accessed by bus 332 from Ningbo city.   • The temple is not far away, but the elderly may feel tired from the parking lot to the temple itself, which needs to climb up to 300 or 400 steps. To the temple site, you can visit the south of the only Northern Song Dynasty wooden structure, very precious. Climb up again, the left side has a viewing platform, you can look at the nearby mountain, the view is very good.

  • I visited during the Chinese New Year so it was packed and we had to park far away. I ended up with blisters, but it was so worth it to learn about archetecture and ancient China.  more »

  • Quite a bit of hike to get to the temple from the bottom! It was a temple without a single nail but the nails had to be added eventually to preserve the building.
