3.8
#10 of 47 in Sightseeing in Nanjing
Architectural Building Tourist Spot
Reminiscent of a castle, Zhonghua Gate (Zhonghuamen Castle) has long served as a strategic protection against invaders. The best preserved gate in Nanjing, the ancient capital of China, stands as a monument to the architectural genius of the Ming dynasty. Explore the complex, 27-vault structure, known as the "treasure gate" because of the military provisions kept by the soldiers who lived here. Climb to the top of the wall to enjoy the cityscape of Nanjing under the glow of the red lanterns that line the aisles. You can take a guided tour to learn more about the history and construction of the gate. Work out when and for how long to visit Zhonghua Gate (Zhonghuamen Castle) and other Nanjing attractions using our handy Nanjing trip itinerary planner.

Where to stay in Nanjing

You won't find a shortage of accommodations in Nanjing, a modern metropolis long on the radars of domestic and international tourists. Look south of the main railway station, following Central Road, to find the primary districts where visitors stay, with clusters of high-rise hotels--some luxurious and others standard, but all comfortable. A number of smaller boutiques set in formerly residential buildings provide atmospheric, well-maintained, and budget-friendly options. Take a look at the side streets around Central Road for a wealth of hostels and guesthouses.
