Nanjing Museum (Nanjing Bowuyuan), Nanjing

(4.2/5 based on 190+ reviews on the web)
One of the largest museum spaces in China, Nanjing Museum (Nanjing Bowuyuan) boasts over 400,000 artifacts spread over more than 70,000 sq m (753,473 sq ft). This is also the first comprehensive museum in China, telling a story about this great civilization since the Paleolithic era, divided into six pavilions. Observe the ancient bull-shaped oil lamp from the Han period, and see unparallel collections of imperial porcelain from the Ming and Qing dynasties. You can also visit model villages showing ancient life in various regions. Exquisite paintings, jade sculptures, and lacquerware, among many other items, show Chinese arts and crafts at their best. You can enter for free, but you need to flash some ID and fill in an entry form, and you'll find little in the way of English information. For travelers who use our world travel planner, Nanjing holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Nanjing Museum (Nanjing Bowuyuan) and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • 南京博物院建築群龐大,可能花上一天時間都逛不完,特別喜歡民國館,裡面原汁原味還原民初時期的街景,如果有民初劇在那裡拍攝都不意外  more »
  • Is the Louvre of Nanjing, more buildings, more floors full of all good things, from dinosaurs to prehistoric times, porcelain, and sculptures, fabrics and paintings and a section, the least interesting dedicated to Digital Museum.

  • Important, the Museum is free! There is no excuse. The Museum has many pieces of different historical epochs and is huge, so to see the detail of parts, would need time and surely know Chinese. What seemed unusual to any other Museum I have visited, is that in 2 of the pavilions (the Republic and that of the intangible heritage) you have artists practicing their disciplines (ceramics, calligraphy, figures of paper, etc.). That you teaches much more than the culture of the region that a vase on a pedestal, you gives sense to them things.

  • A great place to travel!
  • Used to be a volunteer here. The collection is good, but not the best. Worth visiting though.
  • Very good
  • A kind of boring. It's a waste of time to go there.
  • Excellent Museum ! Should publicise it globally !
