#3 of 20 in Museums in Nanjing
History Museum Museum
One of the largest museum spaces in China, Nanjing Museum boasts over 400,000 artifacts spread over more than 70,000 sq m (753,473 sq ft). This is also the first comprehensive museum in China, telling a story about this great civilization since the Paleolithic era, divided into six pavilions. Observe the ancient bull-shaped oil lamp from the Han period, and see unparallel collections of imperial porcelain from the Ming and Qing dynasties. You can also visit model villages showing ancient life in various regions. Exquisite paintings, jade sculptures, and lacquerware, among many other items, show Chinese arts and crafts at their best. You can enter for free, but you need to flash some ID and fill in an entry form, and you'll find little in the way of English information. For travelers who use our world travel planner, Nanjing holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Nanjing Museum and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

Where to stay in Nanjing

You won't find a shortage of accommodations in Nanjing, a modern metropolis long on the radars of domestic and international tourists. Look south of the main railway station, following Central Road, to find the primary districts where visitors stay, with clusters of high-rise hotels--some luxurious and others standard, but all comfortable. A number of smaller boutiques set in formerly residential buildings provide atmospheric, well-maintained, and budget-friendly options. Take a look at the side streets around Central Road for a wealth of hostels and guesthouses.
