The Taipa Houses Museum, Macau

3.9
#5 of 30 in Museums in Macau
Situated within a set of five houses built in the early 20th century, The Taipa Houses Museum displays a variety of artifacts. Get a glimpse into the lives of the wealthy Portuguese expats who lived in Macau in these very residences. The buildings were restored in the mid- to late 20th century to their original specifications, and are surrounded by a picturesque lake and garden. Head inside the houses to see the period interiors, as well as the traditional Portuguese attire worn by the upper classes. • Nice place to visit but would be difficult to find without a guide/tour. Throwback to the Portuguese era very different to the glitz and glam of the casinos.  more »
  • Time I went with a feeling of loss. You can see how Portugal people spent in Macau S.A.R.. It is free no Japan language description, etc. Took half an hour to watch everything. People frequently taking pictures ago the House that stood out. Photo spot or thought.

  • The rhythm is a building group with five Portuguese-style residences, although it is a residential museum, but not every building is open to participation, and some of it is changed to the exhibition space. But this is definitely a good spot for leisure photography, leisurely stroll, Portuguese-style architecture, green and white, are all intoxicated.

  • A nice place to visit to experience what life was like in the early 20th Century if you were rich and Portugese. Very nicely restored with good explanations in English with beautiful grounds.
  • Great place to walk around! Interesting buildings and lots of little stores to shop at
  • A collection of old colonial era houses that have been converted into galleries and a simple museum, overlooking a lake and tall hotels where the sea once was. A relaxing experience where you can just walk around and enjoy the scenery, as well as soak in the history of the place. The place boasts a nice view for photos as well, with a neighbouring garden with different themes throughout the year.
  • The houses are pretty but there isn't really that much in them, nor in the area. I wouldn't consider this site a must-see.
  • Traditional architecture with unique cultural features. Worth a visit since there's not much to see in Macau. Recommend passing by if you're going to Cunha Street.

Where to stay in Macau

Cotai Strip in Macau offers luxury hotels, with famous names providing rooms looking out over the harbor and down into the historical center. Establishments in this area also feature onsite entertainment options and Vegas-style casinos. Look for more affordable options north of Nam Van Lake, where chain and boutique hotels provide rooms with views of the city, the harbor, and across to China proper. Head farther north for lower rates offered by hostels and apartment rentals.
