St. Lawrence Church, Macau

4.2
Elevated above the city streets and away from the crowded attractions of a nearby square, St. Lawrence Church harks back to the 16th century and remains one of the oldest Catholic churches in Macau. The interior is simple yet elegant, with a soft blue ceiling complementing the light yellows of the exterior. Relax on the stone benches at the small garden next to the church, where you can switch off and take a leisurely break from the busy streets. • The Church of San Lorenzo located in Macau S.A.R. World Heritage one day conquer along the way. I arrived Sunday worship timing happened to be exterior and grounds. Is an eclectic Western in there by feeling different from European Church.

  • Catholic church, historic and sacred place... But personnel aren't servant of God. Servant of wealth and prestige. Like others Catholic institutes (instituto salesiano, colégio d. São José, D.Bosco, yuet wah, sacred heart cannosa school...) Faith in God doesn't count... They want wealth and prestige. It's sad.
  • A great stopover while you walk from Ma Zhu temple to Senado Square or the other way around. A church to offer your prayers.
  • Sadly the clock doesn’t work anymore. The church itself is stunning and if stood right at top of staircases, you’ll understand why the story of people waiting for their families to return home as you can look directly into the ocean, past the Government Palace/ Governors House.
  • Found this church by chance after having found the church Augustine closed for some renovation works. It's in a quiet neighbourhood and there's a school just right across it. Very peaceful maybe due to the fact it's on a weekday afternoon.
  • Not to be mistaken for St Paul's church. This one has a rather plain exterior and interior. The views are quite nice but not outstanding considering the alternatives. Give this a miss unless you've already hired a driver and you're on your way into the city after seeing A-Ma temple.

Where to stay in Macau

Cotai Strip in Macau offers luxury hotels, with famous names providing rooms looking out over the harbor and down into the historical center. Establishments in this area also feature onsite entertainment options and Vegas-style casinos. Look for more affordable options north of Nam Van Lake, where chain and boutique hotels provide rooms with views of the city, the harbor, and across to China proper. Head farther north for lower rates offered by hostels and apartment rentals.
