Mandarin's House, Macau

4.3
Dating back to 1869, Mandarin's House is a historic residential complex built by Zheng Wenrui and expanded by his sons. This Cantonese-style structure blends Western décor into the architecture and is one of the largest former family houses in Macau. Although more than 300 tenants once rented home here and created poor building conditions, the government eventually seized the complex and established it as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. • For me, this estate was the highlight of the visit to Macau. It has been renovated extensively, is still original (as opposed to the estate of Dr. Sun in Macau) and has even furniture inside. And the ceiling moldings and wood carvings are simply stunning (for me). Also, almost the entire estate to the visit is free. Also well explained the historical background of the first owner and Builder. Although he ultimately was a businessman, he has campaigned for the revolution. For me also a further sign that Macau as Hong Kong were at that time very important as a haven for Freethinker.

  • A spectacular Chinese-style buildings. Is no discomfort, and walking past. On this day in the building, jazz concerts are open for a while to admire.

  • This was lovely to see, very authentic. It was a bit hard to find, tucked away in a side street, but worth the effort. It's free to get in and we looked around for an hour.  more »

  • This "home complex" is almost 150 years old and covers almost 1 acre!!! The government's restoration was very Professionally/ skilfully carried out. The home belonged to a famous Chinese writer and theoretician, whose works also influenced China's opening to trade "with the West"!! The home covers 2 floors and provides a "window" into Macau's interesting Historical past/character (before "gaming" exerted its influence)... This is a very worthwhile place to visit!!!
  • Definitely one of the crown gems of the Cultural Institute of Macau and historical preservation district on the peninsular. The building is impeccably refurnished. Few to no noticeable nodes of the period where the building fell into neglect remains. It is a wonderful shining chalice of emphasis on heritage in Macau. Definitely a must-see sight !
  • It's a world to itself. Surrounded by walls, it's a place to explore with beautiful rooms and courtyard gardens. An absolute highlight to my day.
  • Well preserved. Worth to visit
  • Very good historical mandarin mansion.
