White Horse Temple, Luoyang

4.3
#2 of 9 in Historic Sites in Luoyang
Soak up the reverential atmosphere and admire the architecture of White Horse Temple, often considered to be the first Buddhist temple in the country. Established under the command of Emperor Ming in 68 CE, the temple was greatly restored and added to during the course of the Ming and Qing dynasties Part of the appeal of the site comes with identifying the design elements and architectural styles of each of those time periods. The temple gains its name from a legend regarding its origin, which tells the tale of Emperor Ming dreaming about the Buddha and asking two deputies to go off in seach of Buddhist scriptures. They returned with two Indian Buddhist monks whom they had met in Afghanistan. The monks carried scriptures, relics, and Buddha statues, as they rode up on two white horses. Amazing and historical living temple filled with monks and people lighting incense and worshipping. Said to be the 'cradle of Chinese Buddhism'. When we were there a woman was hysterically crying...I believe she had recently suffered a miscarriage and had come for solace and to pray for another child. It was very moving.

This Buddhist temple is a very special place. I enjoyed the Chinese Buddhist exhibits, structures and the silent tea house. I will skip the new Indian and Thai section completely when I return. That section takes away from the charm and air of the temple-- a complete waste of space and resources. It consists of some foreign styled temples that are completely devoid of a sense of history, culture and overall meaning. The Chinese temples and pagoda are very special. I will return.

Where to stay in Luoyang

Most international tourists who arrive in Luoyang are much more interested in what lies outside the city, but thankfully its abundant local attractions--natural and man-made--have been largely unspoiled by the addition of hotels, hostels, and inns. The same cannot be said for the city itself, which has covered itself in new buildings, even at times to the detriment of historical sites. Look to the north of the river for the bulk of options, with luxury hotels, backpacker-friendly youth hostels, and ordinary guesthouses to choose from.
