Soak up the reverential atmosphere and admire the architecture of White Horse Temple, often considered to be the first Buddhist temple in the country. Established under the command of Emperor Ming in 68 CE, the temple was greatly restored and added to during the course of the Ming and Qing dynasties Part of the appeal of the site comes with identifying the design elements and architectural styles of each of those time periods. The temple gains its name from a legend regarding its origin, which tells the tale of Emperor Ming dreaming about the Buddha and asking two deputies to go off in seach of Buddhist scriptures. They returned with two Indian Buddhist monks whom they had met in Afghanistan. The monks carried scriptures, relics, and Buddha statues, as they rode up on two white horses.
