Norbulingka (Precious Stone Garden), Lhasa

4.2
#6 of 15 in Historic Sites in Lhasa
The summer palace of Dalai Lamas and a World Heritage Site, Norbulingka (Precious Stone Garden) features 374 mansions and classical Tibetan gardens. Spanning some 36 hectares (89 acres) and considered the greatest man-made garden in Tibet, it was built in 1755 on a hot springs spot. The palace features highly scenic and intricate garden designs with ponds, as well as a mini-zoo with bears, lions, and monkeys. Feast your eyes on the flower patterns and nuances, matched only by the brightly colored facades and ornaments on the pavilions and shrines. Stroll along paved paths and stone bridges by yourself, or consider hiring an informative guide to explain the rich history behind the buildings and sculptures. • The summer palace. Children are free. Adults pay less than ¥100 each. The ticket is beautiful. It is a beautiful place to visit and should be on anyone's list when they come to lhasa. There are many buildings and each is beautiful. The grounds are beautiful and there are many nomads and other Tibetan people walking around to visit each of the temples and buildings. We spent two hours here and it was serene. Only one negative comment is that the toilet is awful and so plan your trip properly and aim at not needing to use the toilet here.
  • Summer palace of successive Dalai Lamas. This place has a smooth environment with nice zoo. Tibetan Shoton festival mostly takes place at this place in summer.
  • Beautiful garden, a wonderful place to visit on a sunny day.
  • Beautiful gardens. Must visit while in Lhasa._

Where to stay in Lhasa

Look along the knotted streets of the eastern district of Lhasa for a number of welcoming guesthouses and storied hotels, close to the main Tibetan attractions around Jokhang Temple. With a little more age and character than options out west, the accommodations in this district attract seasoned travelers and cultural enthusiasts. Out to the west sit a good deal more chain hotels and towering hotel and mall complexes, offering a range of additional facilities, such as swimming pools, restaurants, and karaoke bars.
