4.7/5 based on 80+ reviews on the web
At Ganden Monastery, explore one the "great three" Gelug university monasteries of Tibet, perched high on the 4,200 m (13,779 ft) Wangbur Mountain. Founded in 1409 by Tsongkhapa, the great preacher, saint, and Tibetan Buddhist scholar, the monastery would go on to teach thousands upon thousands of monks, and give rise to the "yellow hat" section of the Tibetan Buddhist faith. Look for yaks as you take the scenic winding road up the desolate mountain to the site; once there, you'll gain an authentic look at an ancient, still-functioning spiritual society. Choose from several walking paths traversing the monastery, including one that circumnavigates the entire site, affording panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. • It is one of the three major monasteries in Lhasa. Its particularity remains its location perched in the mountains. The road from Lhasa is fast enough to the foot of the mountain. Then, you borrow a (fairly recent) winding road to climb to the top (about 4300 m). The view from the parking lot is really beautiful and only worth it. The monastery is also superb and can be visited in one hour. The must is to climb the rest of mountain to admire the view from the top. We did not have time this time, but it is certainly to do for next time!
