Leave your worries at the foot as you climb the marble steps to Kunming Golden Temple through a series of "Heavenly Gates." Once at the temple, you can experience the perfect serenity of this "Hall of Supreme Harmony" while taking in the beauty of the gardens around it--including a camellia and two myrtles planted in the Ming dynasty. The temple itself, the largest copper temple in China, dates back to the 17th century. Don't miss the large 600-year-old copper bell and a 20 kg (44 lb) double-edged (magic) sword belonging to the Taoist deity who, legend has it, watches over the hill. For a less energetic visit, take a taxi or bus up and walk back down, enjoying the views. Stop at the shops for some souvenirs.
