Located on the edge of the Tibetan Himalayan Plateau, the 72,000 hectares (180,000 acres) of Jiuzhaigou Natural Reserve serve as home to innumerable species of plant and animal life. Declared a World Heritage Site, the national park contains nine Tibetan villages, seven of which are still populated. Among the park's other permanent inhabitants are the endangered golden snub-nosed monkey and giant panda. A variety of hiking trails and guided tours are available, ranging in number of days, distance, and focus. Plan ahead--visitors cannot travel in the park without a guide.
