The Center, Hong Kong

3.6
#355 of 1,105 in Things to do in Hong Kong
The Center is the fifth tallest skyscraper in Hong Kong, after International Commerce Centre, Two International Finance Centre (88 storeys), Central Plaza and Bank of China Tower. With a height of 346m, it comprises 73 stories. The Center is one of the few skyscrapers in Hong Kong that is entirely steel-structured with no reinforced concrete core. It is located on Queen's Road Central in the Central and Western District, roughly halfway between the MTR Island Line's Sheung Wan and Central stations.BackgroundThe Center is notable for its arrangement of hundreds of neon lights arranged as bars in increasing frequency towards the top of the building, which slowly scroll through the colours of the spectrum at night. During the Christmas season, the building's neon arrangement follows a festive motif and resembles a Christmas tree. The direct translation of the Chinese name of the building is "Central Centre" or the "centre of Central", even though the building is in fact near the boundary of Central and Sheung Wan (Wing Kut Street).

  • It is just an office building. It is one of the most beautiful skyscrapers in Hong Kong. The building was just sold. It was the largest real estate transaction ever for Hong Kong. No need to go inside...  more »

  • You know when you travel as a tourist and there's this one place in every city where you feel invisible as if you're a ghost watching the living go about their daily lives? The Center is that place in Hong Kong for me. Great for people watching and observing local Hong Kong life. We sat in one corner (because our feet hurt from all the walking we did) and were able to see poeple doing their 'thing'. Two westerners eating burgers while having a hearty chat, a chinese-looking guy using one hand to scroll through is phone and the other to puff his cigarette, eager teenagers passing by going into the building entrance, and tall older fella (maybe in his 50's) dressed as if he's about to go into an important presentation. It's like seeing all walks of Hong Kong life in this one place.
  • Office building in the heart of central. The ground floor area and lobby area is interesting to see as the the building seems to float above it supported by the 8 massive columns that make the corners and points of the star shape of the building. Beyond the 3rd floor where there are a few food shops for office workers there isn't much to see unless you have a reason to go up to one of the floors.
  • Nice and central location. While from outside looks as a very modern building in the side is more of something from the 80s. The toilets in the offices is really messy and require manual keys to open toilets which people end up forgetting inside. The view from some of the offices and meeting rooms are spectacular on a nice and sunny day! There is little selection of restaurants in the building only Cafe de Coral, Prêt à manger and a cedele plus a Coffee Pacific. Nothing really local and nice for lunch.
  • fabolous workspace. in th middle of financial district. you can meet 4-5 meetings around here
  • Like the semi covered urban space that is inviting as sell as serving as bridging space between two street of different elevation
