Sharp Island, Hong Kong
(4.5/5 based on 10+ reviews on the web)
Sharp Island or Kiu Tsui Chau is the largest island in the Kiu Tsui Country Park located at Port Shelter of Sai Kung, Hong Kong. Tourists go there for BBQ activities, fishing, swimming as well as diving. Sharp Island is under the administration of Sai Kung District.GeographyThe island has a maximum elevation of 136 m and an area of 1 km². The two beaches Half Moon Bay Beach (廈門灣泳灘), also known as Hap Mun Bay, and Kiu Tsui Beach (橋咀泳灘) are located on the island. Both are managed by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. When the predicted tides at Ko Lau Wan is lower than or equal to +1.40 meter, visitors can go to an inshore islet named Kiu Tau (橋頭) on foot. For more details, please visit the Hong Kong Observatory website.Different kind of volcanic rocks can be found on Sharp Island. The most frequent ones are rocks with a peculiar pattern on the surface. Other rocks have an unusual pineapple shaped form.HistoryOrigin of the different kinds or rocksIt is believed that about 140 million years ago a volcano was located in Sai Kung. Sharp Island was according to that on the margin of the caldera. This is probably the reason for the widely distributed different volcanic rocks from different geological periods around Sharp Island.Formation of the tomboloThe sea currents near Sharp Island are pushing sand and gravel near the shore. After several years they formed a tombolo, a natural bridge made of different sized rocks and sand – connecting Sharp Island and Kiu Tau. At high tide the tombolo is submerged in water and thus can only be seen when the tide goes out.

  • There isn't much to do on this island but it's a great getaway from the centre of Hong Kong. The best way to get there is to get the MTR to Diamond Hill Station, and then the 92 bus from Diamond Hill ...  more »
  • The beauty of Sharp Island is that it is not very well known and there are not so many tourists, as in other places. It can be reached by boat from the District of Sai Kung, to berth there weight proposals. Small price: $30 round-trip to the far end of the island to Hap Mun Bay, $20 to the middle-end of the island. We took a ticket for $20. At the near end of the island at Kiu Tsui Beach an excellent place for swimming and snorkelling-pebbles and clear water. Plus to all go fine stone spit of unusual stone leading to the little island. We are on it, why didn't went. But in General, it is very picturesque. From Kiu Tsui Beach the directions you can go to the trail leading to the beautiful Hap Mun Bay. The journey takes 1-1, 5:00. It is rather narrow, equipped trail leading across the island, first she rises up, then gently descends. You can perfectly stroll outdoors, view from above on the rocky shores of Sharp Island, get lost. At the other end of the trail you will have to wait for Hap Mun Bay. Very very beautiful Cozy Cove! There, the equipped beach, a few tourists, beautiful water and white sand. In the water, a distance from the shore there are round rafts on pontoons, when he sailed to them, you can sunbathe there. On the beach you can buy masks and flippers and food, but it is much more expensive than in the city, respectively. Although the water is pure, and snorkel and pulls:) Time reverse the ferry keeper you have the beach, showing him his return ticket. Though we have had a ticket to the middle and back end, us no questions were taken from Hap Mun Bay and domchali to Sai Kung. Lovers walk and swim-recommend!
