#7 of 19 in Beaches in Hong Kong
Sharp Island or Kiu Tsui Chau is the largest island in the Kiu Tsui Country Park located at Port Shelter of Sai Kung, Hong Kong. Tourists go there for BBQ activities, fishing, swimming as well as diving. Sharp Island is under the administration of Sai Kung District.GeographyThe island has a maximum elevation of 136 m and an area of 1 km². The two beaches Half Moon Bay Beach, also known as Hap Mun Bay, and Kiu Tsui Beach are located on the island. Both are managed by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. When the predicted tides at Ko Lau Wan is lower than or equal to +1.40 meter, visitors can go to an inshore islet named Kiu Tau on foot. For more details, please visit the Hong Kong Observatory website.Different kind of volcanic rocks can be found on Sharp Island. The most frequent ones are rocks with a peculiar pattern on the surface. Other rocks have an unusual pineapple shaped form.HistoryOrigin of the different kinds or rocksIt is believed that about 140 million years ago a volcano was located in Sai Kung. Sharp Island was according to that on the margin of the caldera. This is probably the reason for the widely distributed different volcanic rocks from different geological periods around Sharp Island.Formation of the tomboloThe sea currents near Sharp Island are pushing sand and gravel near the shore. After several years they formed a tombolo, a natural bridge made of different sized rocks and sand – connecting Sharp Island and Kiu Tau. At high tide the tombolo is submerged in water and thus can only be seen when the tide goes out.

  • Bridge Island is a water clear beach, sand is not very young. There is a way out of the tide, and it is very special to move along the other island.

  • We were there during weekday so there wasn't many people there . Sharp Island is undergoing some restoration / redevelopment so some bits of it is a building site. What I like about this island : - I ...  more »
  • The bridge is one of the scenic areas of the Hong Kong landscape, with views of the island sandbar, pineapple Bao Shi and so on, and also suitable for snorkeling, however, some of the beaches in the public beach are the gravel beaches, although there are changing rooms, lifeguards and so on, but since they are not sandy beaches, it is a pity that if you want to swim, you should recommend to building in the same bridge. The water clear sand is more suitable, but there is no landscape

  • Nice getaway from the city. Beautiful view, easy hike and perfect for nature lovers. Peaceful and clean
  • This little gem is about 10-15 minutes away from Sai Kung (you have to take a ferry from the little boats off the pier). The beach is a little bit rocky and the sand is quite coarse, but the walk across the tombolo is really lovely. You can also find people looking for clams on the tombolo and the water is really clear! Would definitely recommend. One thing to note though is that you shouldn’t wear flip flops because the tombolo is really rocky!
  • 10 min boat ride from Sai Kung Pier. HK$30 round trip in Dec 2017. Beach is good, water is clear and a chance to walk from Sharp Island to nearby island when it is low tide. A good place for an afternoon!
  • Paradise for hiking and sight seeing
  • Crowded in weekends
