Lion Rock, Hong Kong

#7 of 37 in Nature in Hong Kong
Lion Rock, or less formally Lion Rock Hill, is a mountain in Hong Kong. It is located between Kowloon Tong of Kowloon and Tai Wai of the New Territories, and is 495 metres high. The peak consists of granite covered sparsely by shrubs.Lion Rock is noted for its shape: its resemblance to a crouching lion is most striking from the Choi Hung and San Po Kong areas in East Kowloon. A trail winds its way up the forested hillside to the top, culminating atop the "lion's head". The trail can be followed across the profile of the lion, eventually linking up with the MacLehose Trail. The rock provides a view of the city and Hong Kong Island in the distance. The entire mountain is located within Lion Rock Country Park in Hung Mui Kuk, Tai Wai and is made passable by vehicles by Lion Rock Tunnel, which connects Kowloon Tong and Tai Wai.Lion Rock is near another famous rock structure, the Amah Rock. A road in Kowloon City is named Lion Rock Road (獅子石道).

  • Few urban hiking trails will offer the ease of access and the spectaculars of the views than the Lion Rock Hike. The internet has a lot of information on how to get there, but it is basically a 10-min...  more »
  • A beautiful series of vistas. Many stairs involved in this climb. This seemed to be a common spot to have a picnic on one’s day off.  more »
  • The Fanling of the mountains, which are divided between the Kowloon and the New Territories, are very high, with the shape of a lion-like rock on the top of the hill, since many of the people in the past are grassroots, the people of Hong Kong will use the lion to symbolize the spirit of the people of Hong Kong from the happy side, or near the Red Plum Valley in Sha Tin to Mount Lion Mountain, the scenery is very open wide, We can see the integration of the city and the countryside in Hong Kong, although the road is clear, but the position of the lion and the tail is very steep, so it is not suitable for those who do not have the mountain experience to go to

  • Pretty decent hike from bottom to top and definitely would recommend. Worth the view if you personally like city lights and hiking. I see a lot of low ratings from other individuals. My guess is that they either hate the hike or just didn't do their research. View is amazing and the city looks like someone just played SIM City 😂😂
  • Stunning views of the Hong Kong city, opposite viewpoint as Victoria peak. A bit more difficult to reach than Victoria peak but much less crowded. Also it is a true national park hike so not much infrastructure (i.e cell service etc) around. We were lucky enough to get enough bars when we get to the base of the hike to order another Uber
  • Amazing hike, definitely recommended. Incredible views. Steep inclines at points, wear good footwear. Need to be in decent shape to do this.
  • Great hiking experience and view from the top. Slightly more difficult than the Dragon’s back hike. Tip: Avoid taking unexplored routes as you may get lost in the dense jungle on the steep hill. Don’t get attracted and cross the danger sign to take up the path taken by other adventurous hikers. You may land in a serious trouble.
  • On weekends too many maids up there. Need to draw a ticket to get your turn for a photo. Very nice view to HK island ...
