For magnificent views, follow the trail to Lantau Peak, the second highest summit in Hong Kong. This is not a challenge to be taken lightly: assess the fitness levels and walking ability of those in your group before setting off. • If you have time in Hong Kong, Lantau Trail is fantastic for hiking. It's quite physical. It is a long hiking trail that makes a loop from East to West across the island. If you want to just browse, plan several days knowing that it is not always obvious to find transport or housing on the circuit. For my part, I left walk from the metro station to Tung Chung to make the ascent of Sunset Peak. The departure is not easy to find, we need a plan. The climb is very steep in the forest on endless markets. But when it emerges on the ridges, the panorma of mountain is sensational. Continue to the Lantau Peak with a dizzying descent, then a climb a bit less harsh, but even more beautiful with views of the coast and the sea. I stopped at the monastery of Po Lin through the Wisdom Path and the great Buddha after 3 h of hiking around because I couldn't find the path then to Tai O I so went by bus with regret. It's kinda the problem, really need a specific card because the markup is limited to the extreme and there plan anywhere, too bad. The village of Tai O is very beautiful and well served by buses. If you can, I recommend you to take more steps to the South where I saw the hikers, but then with an accurate map.

  • We took the MTR then a bus, and hiked from Pak Kung Au to the Big Buddha. We'd done Dragon's Back the day before and enjoyed it, but this is certainly much harder. You need to leave at least 3-4 hours...  more »
  • Doable hike up from Pak Kung Au to Peak and descending towards Nong Ping. Things to note : bring hiking poles as there are no railings and fence at the sides, descending needs much support. Total time...  more »

  • Sections 2 (with a loop to Sunset peak) and 3 are absolute must for a hiker
  • It is such a great place to get away from busy city with a group of friends to hike and enjoy the natural environment!
  • Do when it's not too hot - sec 2 and 3 hard!
  • Nature and greenery aplenty!!
  • great hike with awesome 360 views. will take about 4 to 6 hours to and fro. take note theres very little vegetation cover so if youre going on a warm or sunny day, bring lots of water and i hat if possible. there's also a small unmanned shelter at the top of lantau peak.

Where to stay in Hong Kong

Head to Tsim Sha Tsui for the main tourist section of Hong Kong, where it's easy to find reasonably priced accommodations to suit your particular requirements, with more expensive hotels closer to the water and side streets offering budget hostels. You can also consider Hong Kong Island, which offers easy links to the mainland via its ferry and train lines. Chain hotels sit in the northern section of the island, where luxury and budget options remain available.
