Bird Street, Hong Kong

2.8
#59 of 239 in Shopping in Hong Kong
Head to Bird Street for insight into how captive songbirds live in traditional Chinese gardens. Even if you're not here to make a purchase from one of the dozen or so stalls stocking songbirds, check out the beautiful hand-crafted bird-keeping paraphernalia, such as bamboo cages and porcelain water dishes. The street is also very popular with songbird enthusiasts, so this is a good opportunity to observe this culture firsthand. • A bit crowded in the early morning, but the best time to visit. The sing birds are magnificent and aplenty. I would not miss. Videos a must.  more »
  • If you're sensitive about birds in small cages then avoid. Some of the cages are cramped, and there are live insects everywhere (contained in bags, or boxes) sold as bird food. Worth a visit if you're...  more »

  • This is a fascinating place to take a walk. Unlike other markets which have grown accustomed to setting to local tourists, the bird market is for aficionados and local buyers, but the display is open to anyone and is a quite a spectacle. There are beautiful handcrafted bamboo cages for sale and birds for sale and displayed in these and other cages. Be forewarned, the traditional animal care provisions are too cramped and not very ethical, but for those travelers who can accept the practice as it is, they will appreciate the birds and their colorful plumage.
  • A neat little garden where typically men carry/hang their bird cages and chit chat with their friends. It's part of Hong Kong's culture and a hobby mostly for men back in the days. There are small and affordable bird cages and ceramic dishes for souvenir.
  • Some people (not shopkeepers) bring their own birds just to chill out here, nice
  • Bird Street is very popular with tourists. If you go early on weekends you can see enthusiasts displaying their birds. There is a wide range of birds available especially during spring. Cages are highly decorative but are far too small for most birds. I eventually found a large old cage for my very active pair of Japanese White eyes / Seung Si.
  • A peaceful place to stroll and buy a bird. There are probably 70-ish bird merchants here.

Where to stay in Hong Kong

Head to Tsim Sha Tsui for the main tourist section of Hong Kong, where it's easy to find reasonably priced accommodations to suit your particular requirements, with more expensive hotels closer to the water and side streets offering budget hostels. You can also consider Hong Kong Island, which offers easy links to the mainland via its ferry and train lines. Chain hotels sit in the northern section of the island, where luxury and budget options remain available.
