  • Worth a visit if you're in the area. If you're tripping to the flower market, walk around and you will come across some bird song coming from a hill. Walk up and you'll see and hear the bird market. A...  more »
  • Decided to go out here to pass some time. Lots of various birds to see and buy. We saw Maccas, Sulphur Crested Cockatoos, Roselles, finches and lots more that I couldn't identify. Pleasant time waster...  more »
  • Combine this with Ladies Market, the Flower Market and Goldfish Market. Not sure what the RSPCA would make of it, but worth a look even if just to see some of the exotic birds and the bugs that are cu...  more »

  • This is a fascinating place to take a walk. Unlike other markets which have grown accustomed to setting to local tourists, the bird market is for aficionados and local buyers, but the display is open to anyone and is a quite a spectacle. There are beautiful handcrafted bamboo cages for sale and birds for sale and displayed in these and other cages. Be forewarned, the traditional animal care provisions are too cramped and not very ethical, but for those travelers who can accept the practice as it is, they will appreciate the birds and their colorful plumage.
  • Pretty devastating to see your most famous national birds (rainbow lorikeet) dying in the bottom of a cage that's overcrowded with a cockatiel and two baby not yet feathered Amazonian grey parrots. Interesting to see the bags of bugs on sale, heartbreaking to see the result of illegal bird smuggling. At least the goldfish street has lifted its game since 2005, and dogs are now considered pets. I guess it can only get better from here. See the flower markets, give this a miss.
  • A neat little garden where typically men carry/hang their bird cages and chit chat with their friends. It's part of Hong Kong's culture and a hobby mostly for men back in the days. There are small and affordable bird cages and ceramic dishes for souvenir.
  • Great melody from the birds, while seeing some exotic species. Only a small place but its proximity to the flower markets maket it worth a trip to see both.
  • Bird Street is very popular with tourists. If you go early on weekends you can see enthusiasts displaying their birds. There is a wide range of birds available especially during spring. Cages are highly decorative but are far too small for most birds. I eventually found a large old cage for my very active pair of Japanese White eyes / Seung Si.

Where to stay in Hong Kong

Head to Tsim Sha Tsui for the main tourist section of Hong Kong, where it's easy to find reasonably priced accommodations to suit your particular requirements, with more expensive hotels closer to the water and side streets offering budget hostels. You can also consider Hong Kong Island, which offers easy links to the mainland via its ferry and train lines. Chain hotels sit in the northern section of the island, where luxury and budget options remain available.
