Home to a vast array of pagodas, shrines, and statues, Lingyin Temple ranks as one of the most ornate and revered places of worship in Chinese Buddhism. Originally built in the early fourth century CE, the temple in the centuries since has undergone destruction and rebirth more than 15 times over. You'll find the entire complex awash with golden figures and lavish decorations, such as the gigantic Buddha statue that takes center stage in the main hall. Head to the "Hall of the Four Heavenly Kings" to marvel at the eponymous statues looming inside. Don't miss seeing the outdoor stone pagoda said to house the ashes of Huili, the Indian monk who founded the temple. Really enjoyed this as part of a one day tour of Hangzhou. Could have spent much longer here and although I was there during the National week holidays it was not overly crowded.
