4.1/5 based on 1,200+ reviews on the web
Wander the quiet streets and pedestrianized lanes of Shamian Island to glimpse one of the province's finest remaining clusters of European colonial architecture. Beginning in the 18th century, merchants and traders from France, Great Britain, United States, Germany, and elsewhere in the West built mansions and residences along the shore, leaving behind an indelible mark on the area's architectural heritage. Explore tree-lined avenues and you'll find an array of grand European-style buildings, as well as numerous lush gardens, fountains, and squares. Keep an eye out for the plaques that adorn many of the more notable buildings and offer insightful information about the structure's history and construction date.
