Sacred Heart Cathedral, Guangzhou

4.3
Admire the imposing Gothic facade of Sacred Heart Cathedral. Completed in 1888 after 25 years of construction, this structure remains the largest Gothic church in Southeast Asia. Observe the imposing stone building's towering pillars, or step inside to escape the city hustle and bustle and take in the peaceful ambience. To take part in a religious service, stop by on Sunday afternoon, when the church holds an English-language Mass. • The Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Guangzhou was built in 1888 with French financing and is Catholic affiliation. France was one of the colonial potential which imposed during century XIX treated unequal to China, forcing her to open concessions in their coastal areas for the cheap goods traffic. The Cathedral was damaged during the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976). Later, during the 1980s and between 2004 and 2006 it was restored.

  • Great old church. Very spiritual. Great photo opportunities. The local stores have been decorated for Christmas.  more »
  • Very beautiful, not far from Beijing Road. According to the world, there are not many churches built with stone. The church will have a regular ceremony, and the friends who want to participate can pay attention to it. Ten minutes is enough if you just watch.

  • One of the few Chatolic cathedral in Guangzhou. For my European eyes it is not special, but if we count that it is located there... By the way it is the biggest gothic cathedral in South-East Asia!
  • One of the largest cathedrals I have seen in China. It is a magnificent piece of architecture, but is nothing compared to cathedrals in Europe.
  • The largest Christian /Catholic Church in Guangzhou. The Neo-Gothic style of the fully equipped and active church impresses locals and travelers in the same way. The interior atmosphere often is more the same like in a Buddhist Temple. (Pls, avoid any noise and walking around DURING SERVICE, because they don't like that.)
  • One of the Catholic Church in Guangzhou city. located at Yide Rd.
  • It is certainly one of the bigger church in China and worth a visit but be prepared to abused by unfriendly staffs. They treat visitors like dirt. Gate remains closed even past opening hours. To make matter worst, the church was closed for no apparent reasons so visitors are allow only to walk around the compound. Many visitors waited for more than an hour for the church to open only to find out that the church itself is closed.

Where to stay in Guangzhou

Guangzhou's commercial industries make it well-equipped to host visitors, though do book well ahead of time if traveling during the peak fall and spring trade fair rushes. The city's gleaming skyscrapers contain a number of the best four- and five-star hotels in Guangzhou, while others lie tucked away in historical European-style buildings. For budget-friendlier options, a number of youth hostels welcome a steady stream of international visitors, though most are located outside of the city center.
