Listed as a national scenic spot, Drum Mountain (Gu Shan) features many historical sites, including a temple known as “a treasure of Buddhist sutras,” and inscriptions on cliffs left by notables of past dynasties. The long hike up the steep hill may be strenuous for some, so consider riding the cable car while enjoying scenic views of the city and its surroundings. Another 20 minutes' hike up the mountain trail and 2,000 stone steps will lead you to the temple. Over 300 inscriptions--some dating back to the 10th century--lay scattered around the complex, along with 18 distinctive rock formations, each one telling a different story associated with popular legends. The mountain also boasts caves, waterfalls, ancient rhododendron trees, and a tea plantation.
