The Ancestral Temple, Foshan

4.2
A sprawling and important Taoist temple complex, The Ancestral Temple provides a calm spot to unwind in the midst of downtown. Initially built in the 11th century, this cultural treasure reveres a god that controls the waters of Guangdong. Known as the Zen City, the ancient temple complex features a number of impressive statues and intricate carvings. The main hall, built in 1372, has a place for sacrifices and features a statue of Xuan Wu, a warrior god with gilded head and feet. If your timing's right, you may see the locals exercising Tai Chi, or a lion dance performance. • The number one place to visit in Foshan. It is a garden, museum, temple and also memorial hall for Ip Man and Master Huang Fei Hong. The buildings in this park is pretty old but is kept in good condition. Look out for the intricate exterior ceiling work which is common of the grand houses of that time. The temple is the main attraction and the museum serve to explain a bit of the history. Plan to spend some time here and if you want to see the lion dance performance check out the latest info on the timing.
