Dujiangyan Irrigation System, Dujiangyan

4.3
Still controlling the waters of the Minjiang river after 2,200 years, Dujiangyan Irrigation System makes an impressive World Heritage Site at the foot of Mount Qingcheng, the birthplace of Taoism. Contemplate the feat of engineering as you cross the boardwalk suspension bridge over the roaring river, which supplies Chengdu's fertile farmlands. Climb the observation pagoda on the top of the hill for an overview of the waterworks, giving a sense of the ingenuity and sheer human labor involved in its creation. Afterwards, sample local cuisine and visit temples on the banks. Get a tour guide to explain all the details. • The irrigation system is impressive, but those are rather interesting sprawling Taoism Temple in the complex all in all it is a day trip. The journey from Chengdu takes a couple of hours each way by train therefore better be a guide with car hire which brings you back and forth. The irrigation system takes a few hours to walk around and look at the temple but caution there are very many and even more steps.

  • Participated in the day of the team to Dujiangyan, will certainly see is the Dujiangyan Water Conservancy project. Jing is very big, and when the day is introduced to introduce a lot of information about water conservancy projects. In addition to being able to take a look at this great project, it is a great place to hear about history.

  • A marvelous ancient irrigation system constructed around 250 years B.C.! The materials used were just wood, bamboo and stones. Worth to spend half a day to have a look.  more »

  • Really interesting area. The pavilion at the top of the hill is easily accessible by an escalator but badly signposted. If I remember a two way trip to the top was 40 yuan. Lots of temples and great views. Dujiangyan itself is a really nice place if you spend a couple of days there go to see the pandas, no photos though 28/3/18. Spend a day or two in the mountains the walking is great, you may even be lucky enough to see some monkeys. Cable cars access close to both peaks. Leave a padlock!!!
  • Been here twice while visiting Chengdu. Always a nice time, good food, shopping and snacks all around. Ooooh there's an amazing vegetarian buffet place super close to here too.
  • TL;DR the place may have been marvelous hundreds or thousands of years ago, but the experience today is terrible and it is unclear what historic message or lesson, if any, they want to convey to their visitors. It was very crowded and loud everywhere, with a mixed experience of modern commerical constructs and seemingly ancient buildings -- presented in a highly incoherent way. The supposedly wooden ancient river dikes have been replaced by concrete without much explanation or reference as to the reason of the replacement. Although there were pieces of wood on display, on land, here and there, they appeared to be recently varnished and did not look authentic. I wasn't sure what parts were genuinely from thousands or so years ago, what were the purposes and functions of the design, and what I was supposed to look at. In-park buggies are not free (park entrance isn't free, or even cheap either), there was a huge line up, and the place was very noisy. Buggy drivers honked non-stop as if they badly needed to visit the restrooms, and thus walking visitors were total nuisances to them. We chose to walk instead of taking the buggy because of its wait time, and we were practically deafs after the 30-minute walk that the buggy covers. There were hawkers everywhere in the park, selling unsightly stuffs ranging from touristy souvenirs, counterfeit Disney toys, to cucumbers and extortionarily priced popsicles. Definitely not worth the 3-hour round trip from Chengdu. If you have a day to kill, skip this place and visit some old alleys in the city, enjoy a cup of some really good tea, and watch a traditional show. Did I mention there were tons of people everywhere?
  • Good place to visit load days how powerful irrigation system Develop. Beautiful place and good food to eat too
  • Must see attraction in western China. Dual language story boards. Even when busy it's still easy to get around. Many photo ops. Plenty of restrooms. Get there early due to tight parking.
