The Dazu Rock Carvings, Dazu County
(4.8/5 based on 190+ reviews on the web)
Discover an awe-inspiring display of Chinese religious rock carvings and sculptures at UNESCO-inscribed The Dazu Rock Carvings. The carvings scatter across 75 protected sites, which contain over 50,000 statues and thousands of Chinese characters. The site gained World Heritage status due to its grand scale and aesthetic quality of the sculptures. Admire these magnificent carvings, which date as far back as the seventh-century Tang dynasty and some of which are in rock shrines, others carved directly into open rock face. These beautiful carvings demonstrate the harmonious relationship between Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism in the region. Access for wheelchairs, pushchairs, and those with walking difficulties is limited. • The first time I found myself in front of the Dazu carvings I had my chill down your spine that always tells me the fact of being in the presence of a great masterpiece. Inner Mongolia is not only one of the only places in China but in the world. Unthinkable for me go to China without making a stop in this extraordinary place that wants to leave. Here there are more than fifty thousand among statues and bas-reliefs dating to the late Tang period (9th century), the oldest, and the period of Southern Song dynasty (1127-1279) to the latest. Although the sites are nearly forty scattered throughout the hills around, the two that will leave you breathless are that of North Hill (Bei Shan) and that Valuable Top Hill (Baoding Shan). I absolutely recommend to start the visit from Bei Shan and then transport in Baoding Shan. The ticket costs 170 Yuan. The sites are open from 8.30 to 18. The town of Dazu doesn't offer good accommodations like hotels and for this Council to make base in Chongqing, which is just over a hundred and fifty kilometers. The most practical and easy to get to the site is a car rental with driver, return should not cost you more than $180 and the property of Chongqing will take care of it. Visit at the end of October the first time and in January the second I never found the crowd.

  • With a private driver from Chongqing was about 2 hours drive from Dazu. Nowadays there is also a high speed train to Dazu; but the rockcarvingss seem than 30 km from the train station. Not so useful. Baoding Shan park is beautifully landscaped; everything is up close. The sculptures, mostly Buddha-like images, are ca. 800 years old and well preserved. To see include the 18 layers of hell with horrorscenes and the Wheel of Predestination. But by far the most beautiful we found the Golden Guanyin 1007 with the arms: gorgeous! -and Oh, Yes, the reclining Buddha is "under constructure" so not to see. -There is also another fun museum with pictures of the other important caves such as Datong, Luoyang and others

  • One of the most beautiful sites I've seen in China. Merit moving to Chongqing just to see cel - 14 kilometers to the northeast of Dazu (with that of Beishan at 2 km to the North)

  • It is very precious and need protection from seepage Prof. R C Agrawal
  • 交通不太方便,门票略贵,和圣寿寺门票捆绑销售非常不合理。
  • 很偏僻的地方,但真的很震撼
  • 交通方便,历史鉴证
