Cave Ruin
Marvel at rock-carved statues of sitting Buddhas at Yungang Grottoes, a World Heritage Site perched on the banks of the Shi Li river at the base of the Wuzhou mountains. The unique cave complex has 252 grottoes featuring over 51,000 stone statues and 18,000 sq m (193,750 sq ft) of intricately carved areas. Admire ornamented arches and a 15 m (49 ft) tall ornamented pagoda-like column, summoning the highest achievements of the first wave of Buddhist art in China. Started in 450, the carvings display a rigorous unity of style, layout, and design. Reach the grottoes via boat tour, and consider hiring a guide to get the most of your visit. • With our very little knowledge of Chinese, we contracted our taxi driver to take us out to Yungang Grottoes, wait for us, and bring us back to the hotel for about 100 RMB. Don't book these trips at yo...  more »
  • The location is wonderful and I suggest a tour. Despite having content to explain the caves is interesting to have someone who knows the story. Currently, many tourist places in China are being renovated by the Government and therefore, there is a mix of parts built just for tourism and parts actually. Our guide David we hired by Top China Travel tronou the visit very productive. We stayed in Datong and we left with car.

  • One of the most amazing sites I have been to in China, comparable in scale and splendor to the Terra Cotta soldiers in Xi'an.  more »

  • One of the main historical tourist attraction in Datong, Shanxi. Worth exploring the vast areas and admiring the ancient religious relics found here.
  • Simply incredible to see. Photos don't do the caves and carvings justice.
  • Fantastic history, the statutes are amazing in size and details!
  • It was about 20 years ago. While the art work was impressive, the coal dust of Datong was quite shocking. Hopefully they've cleaned up since.
  • the entrance/exit is actually quite scenic! I climbed a rock to take this photo (crazy tourist!).

Where to stay in Datong

As well as restoring and recreating its historical sites in recent years, Datong has been building hotels. Fairly evenly spread across what is a fairly small and non-residential urban area, you'll find a number of hotels offering standard and luxury options, with some high-rises providing good views of the ordered streets of the city. Budget-friendly options can be found off the main boulevards throughout Datong, and include guesthouses, the odd youth hostel, and budget hotels.
