Yungang Grottoes, Datong

(4.7/5 based on 700+ reviews on the web)
Marvel at rock-carved statues of sitting Buddhas at Yungang Grottoes, a World Heritage Site perched on the banks of the Shi Li river at the base of the Wuzhou mountains. The unique cave complex has 252 grottoes featuring over 51,000 stone statues and 18,000 sq m (193,750 sq ft) of intricately carved areas. Admire ornamented arches and a 15 m (49 ft) tall ornamented pagoda-like column, summoning the highest achievements of the first wave of Buddhist art in China. Started in 450, the carvings display a rigorous unity of style, layout, and design. Reach the grottoes via boat tour, and consider hiring a guide to get the most of your visit. Put Yungang Grottoes on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Datong vacation generator.

  • We stopped in Datong only to see this sight and we are very happy we did. Amazing sculpture and color. So ancient. Good explanatory signs in English. If you stay close to the Railway Station it's easy...  more »
  • Stone Buddha Temple is located 20 km west of Datong is the large caves West 1 km across. All Buddhas was built in the fifth century Northern Wei Dynasty's attractions. Walking fine and deserves to be in that! No three grottoes in China together with Longmen Grottoes, Mogao Caves in Dunhuang.

  • A bus to catch to 3kuai which drops you off at the entrance of the site. Then, a little walk to the first caves, some of which are stunning. Outside we can see nothing but inside appear gigantic Buddhas, frescoes and sculptures to the top of the cave. In addition, the day I went there (Sunday less than a week of Chinese new year) there is almost nobody. Perfect for taking pictures

  • 我非常喜欢云冈石窟,这里属于北魏的艺术,所以比较接近莫高窟,而洛阳的龙门石窟是在云冈石窟之后的。也就是说这里的佛像比较接近佛教传到中国时期的样子。
