Nine Dragon Screen, Datong

Architectural Building Library
Admire the intricate ornamets of flying, golden-scaled dragons at Datong’s Nine Dragon Screen, the oldest and largest glazed wall in China. With its impressive size, 8 m (26 ft) high, 43.5 m (149 ft) long, and 2.02 m (6.6 ft) thick, the wall, built in 1392, features 426 specially-fired glazed bricks. They form exceptionally well-preserved glazed dragons, with images of dogs, oxen, deer, rabbits, and other animals all visible. Superbly colored green waves on the bottom and the background of blue and yellow clouds make this piece of art a great photo stop opportunity. Admire the pond with a stone bridge in front of the wall, creating a lovely reflection of this exquisite work of art. Put Nine Dragon Screen into our Datong travel itinerary maker and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • Not easy to loacte, even with a map, as it's behind a blank wall with only a tiny ticket hatch and entrance that's easy to walk past without seeing. But it's quite a magnificent work of art.  more »
  • Ok as a fill in visit but your life wont end if you never see it. You will probably spend around 20 minutes there.  more »

  • 非常小,就一個院子圍住一扇牆,人若不多,倒還好。
