3.8/5 based on 90+ reviews on the web
Surviving several dynasties, Huayan Temple of Datong represents one of the best-preserved Buddhist temples of the Liao period (907-1125 CE). As you tour the vast complex, split into two levels, notice decorations on the walls of the buildings, frescoes, wood carvings, and Buddhist scriptures. Inside each hall you'll find several bronze Buddha statues, with intricate, colorful details around them. Climb the tall, wooden pagoda for a view of the gardens and smaller halls that surround the temple. • Nice visit to the temples however most of them have now been replaced with new buildings and made to look old which is a shame, would prefer to see the old buildings but still very pretty
  • We went without any expectation here in the 4th week of our vacation and had so many temples seen. However, we were very impressed with the beautiful buildings, statues and wall paintings. Some were more than 1000 years old; others were relatively recently created/fixed up. The complex was quiet, quiet. Looked anywhere at our leisure and enjoyed it, no guides with piercing ear speakers, no hordes of people.
