Huayan Temple of Datong, Datong
(3.9/5 based on 95+ reviews on the web)
Surviving several dynasties, Huayan Temple of Datong represents one of the best-preserved Buddhist temples of the Liao period (907-1125 CE). As you tour the vast complex, split into two levels, notice decorations on the walls of the buildings, frescoes, wood carvings, and Buddhist scriptures. Inside each hall you'll find several bronze Buddha statues, with intricate, colorful details around them. Climb the tall, wooden pagoda for a view of the gardens and smaller halls that surround the temple.
