Lake Namtso, Damxung County
Categories: Bodies of Water, Nature & Parks
Head up to Lake Namtso, a body of water high in the Tibetan mountains, blending a picturesque natural aspect with cultural importance and history. Its name, Tibetan for "Heavenly Lake," makes sense when one considers its altitude and its appearance. At 4,718 m (15,479 ft) above sea level, the lake stands as the highest saltwater lake in the world, while snow-capped mountains and vast grasslands surround the clear blue water in a dramatic natural scene. A long-standing place of pilgrimage, the lake supports a community of pastoral nomads who live in the grasslands around it, along with their colorfully dressed yaks. For travelers who use our international travel planner, Damxung County holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Lake Namtso and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

The ideal is to have snow on the peaks and not on the road. The pass to access exceeds the 5000 m and a fall of snow in the night will be enough to close the collar to traffic for the following morning. There are also sunset to get the pure blue color of this Lake. If all these conditions are met, you have a grandiose nature show! Note that this lake is sacred to Tibetans, and you may have a few people you support for photo shooting.show original
