Chongsheng Three Pagodas, Dali

4.2
#1 of 11 in Historic Sites in Dali
Built over a thousand years ago, Chongsheng Three Pagodas allegedly helped scare off the area's pesky dragons. The surrounding area is well maintained, with lots of greenery and a pond reflecting an image of the pagodas and providing an ideal photo op. There are quite a few steep steps to climb here, so wear comfortable shoes and bring plenty of drinking water. • OK place to visit if you haven’t already seen 101 other Pagodas in China, but, and it should be with a capital B, expensive to get into when there are literally hundreds of free places to see exactly ...  more »
  • You get to this site unprepared because the guides, even the mythical, give information very sparse. The thing that we need to know is that you need to be prepared to a moderate physical effort because km to get there from the old Town are 2 but from North Gate is especially after passing the 3 pagodas are only at the beginning of a hike. Each structure seems the last because the others are hidden from the perspective and the slope of the mountain. Therefore the wisest thing would be to ascend by bus and then descend if it wasn't that so you get tired less but enjoys even less this dimension of ascent is not accidental. Even after the Buddha is the surprise of a 3 storey building above it: the International Buddhist cultural centre. The return shuttle bus is a must. Length of visit no less than 2-3 hours.

  • Difficult access from or we would stay but worth it. Picturesque site made up of many buildings. There are more than three pagodas

  • It's worth it just witnessing the architecture of the three pagodas. Imagine how they manage to build it hundreds of years ago. However, the 崇聖寺 complex neighbouring the three pagodas does give me an artificial impression.
  • An astonishing place with marvelous views and structure. Just get to the end of the temple and look back. It's worth of all the hard work.
  • Nice temple, extraordinary guide in one way or another.
  • One of key landmark of Dali. Magnificently built and has a long history.
  • This is a lovely area to walk through that does not take long but is quite pleasant. It does not have the historical significance we would like to romanticize it with and you will immediately see that the pagodas and temples were hastily put up buildings likely around the time that the olympics happened in China. Though this is a plaster and mortar affair which already shows signs of wear and tear, the walk itself is very nice and you get great views of the mountains and photo opportunities. A little expensive for what it is but worth the walk if you have time in your itinerary. Just don't expect any history or meaningful architecture.
