Wangjianglou Park (West Gate 1), Chengdu

4.3
#4 of 23 in Parks in Chengdu
Absorb exquisite Chinese architecture and picturesque bamboo gardens at Wangjianglou Park (West Gate 1). Situated on the south banks of Jinjiang River, the park features structures and sculptures dedicated to the Tang dynasty (618-907) poet, Xui Tao, the legendary minister of Shu, Zhuge Liang, and the Sage of Poetry. History tells that Tao wrote 500 poems in her lifetime and that she was greatly admired by her contemporaries, which was unfortunately an unusual feat for a woman in those times. Here she is memorialized by the 39 m (128 ft) River Watching Tower (Wangjiang Tower) and large groves of bamboo, consisting of over 150 separate species. Take a peaceful stroll around the verdant and carefully manicured park, and look out for various poems left by bewitched celebrities. • Very beautiful and tranquil place! Amazing to just walk around or jog or do morning exercises. Lots of bamboo creates a fairy tale atmosphere. Очень приятный парк, как волшебный бамбуковый лес.
  • Beautiful park in Chengdu. Perfect to escape the noise and enjoy a cup of tea next to the river.
  • We came here Monday morning, and it was reasonably quite and peaceful. This park is beautiful with nice view of the Ming river. It has a few historical buildings. Most of all, it is well maintained and clean.
  • This park area is dedicated to the memories of a great ancient female poet, 薛濤。 Not only it has several ancient buildings, many types of bamboo also call this home. Nice place to spend a few hours!
  • It's good place to have a rest. Some part of the park need to buy a ticket to have access.

Where to stay in Chengdu

The vast majority of visitors to Chengdu look for their accommodations along Tianfu Avenue, the main arterial road that cuts the southern district of the modern city in two. Upmarket and standard hotels can be found along the road and its surrounding side streets, overlooking pleasant plazas and parks, or the river that snakes around to the east. Guesthouses and hostels throughout the south provide a welcome range of budget accommodations, but heading to the more built-up and residential northern area will reveal a greater amount of particularly cost-effective options.
