Puppet Emperor's Palace (Wei Huang Gong), Changchun

4.0
#1 of 9 in Museums in Jilin
At Puppet Emperor's Palace (Wei Huang Gong) learn more about the life of China's last emperor. During the occupation of Manchuria, the Japanese built the palace as a miniature version of the Forbidden City for Puyi, the last emperor of the Qing dynasty and the puppet leader of the occupied state. The complex--built in a mixture of Chinese, Japanese, and European architectural styles--includes an inner court with the royal residence, an outer court with administrative offices, landscaped gardens with a fish pond, tennis court, a golf course, a swimming pool, and a horse track. Look for a throne room featuring a life-size doll of the young Puyi. Film director Bernardo Bertolucci used the palace as the setting of his acclaimed movie "The Last Emperor," which depicts Puyi's life. • The puppet palace is well kept and has several buildings filled with artifacts to see. Also, of course, lots of shopping. It can get quite busy in the summer so I suggest early spring or fall.  more »

  • Very nice little palace with extensive grounds and beautiful gardens and detailed displays. It is also rather tourist friendly, with captions in English and Japanese as well. The tickets are also only around 20 RMB (approx. $3). However, the buildings are not like the Forbidden City in Beijing, it is relatively modern, considering it was built around 70 years ago. The main building is currently in renovation. The gardens are not like the traditional Chinese gardens, it is more Russian inspired with simple flora. If you want ancient displays, this place only displays artifacts within the age of 100 years, and they are more Russian. It is very close to the Changchun Light Rail, and a museum and small Russian shopping center is also within the grounds. Overall, this is place is good for a nice stroll or a quick visit.
  • The Chinese government has restored and maintained this place very well. I have a special interest in modern Chinese history and ,therefore, I was totally immersed into the audio narration guide. However, I would recommend side readings to get a clearer picture of the events and personalities - Jonathan Spence's Search for Modern China. My wife also enjoyed this place. As a newbie, she was impressed with the maintenance of every room in the palace.
  • A great place with history in the "too modern" city of Changchun. Definitely worth a visit to understand China-Japan history and relationship, as well as to relax on the nice little gardens inside.
  • I loved this place! I was so impressed about the place history. Is a place that I will "never forget".
