  • Maybe for some it is not important, but I think necessary to clarify entry that there are "two" Catholic churches in China: the official, recognized by the Government and under strict control of the State, whose bishops must be fidelity to the Government rather than the Pope; and the clandestine, who refuses to obey the Communist Government atheist and policies contrary to Christianity. For every good Catholic visiting China dilemma arises immediately: would attend or not an "official" Church, knowing that most of its bishops were not named by the Pope and not obey him? After researching the subject, I found that foreigners are encouraged to not attempt to contact the clandestine Church, because it is persecuted by the State and put in irrigation. In addition, the Bishop of Beijing sought and obtained the forgiveness of the Holy See and is in communion with the Pope, as well, we decided that we could in conscience attend mass at this Cathedral. Very close to the metro, and our Grand Mercury hotel, the Cathedral is the seat of the Bishop of Beijing. We went to mass at Christmas, which is one working day like any other in all of China. 24, Christmas Eve mass, is only open to the faithful who get ticket, so we try it. We saw the great display of the Chinese police, who placed Archway detectors of metals at the entrances and patrols on the street. I had read that at 12:30 there was mass in Italian and Spanish, but the information turned out to be false and we returned to the 7 pm mass in Chinese. The celebration was beautiful and with an undeniable spirituality of the present Chinese. Despite the language barrier, we could celebrate the birth of Christ with great devotion Chinese brothers. The temple is beautiful both inside and outside. I recommend a visit and a couple of shopping at the gift shop. I bought Chinese ornaments with Christian motifs.

  • It was nice to attend Church in English in China. The 10:30a.m. worship service in the South Cathedral is apparently always in English. The scriptures were read in English and French and the pastor de...  more »
  • Where I live Matteo Ricci, Jesuit, first Westerner to be admitted to the forbidden city. Historically and left little or nothing. Accustomed to European Churches this is not nice at all. If you go strictly religious reasons Council mass 10.30 in English: very well prepared, experienced and participated in a language understandable. If you want to "know" or better meet the faith of a young community I recommend the celebration of 8.30 in Chinese. You will not understand anything but you will feel in communion with the people.
