Snaking along ridges and across hills, The Great Wall of Gubeikou preserves the ancient architectural beauty of a part of the Great Wall that has never undergone reconstruction. The structures' rather dilapidated state actually lets you get a close-up view of the way they were made. Enjoy views of huge green hilly expanses while hiking along its shrub-dotted pavements. Stretching for about 40 km (25 mi), the section features over 170 turrets, with the Big Flower Watchtower the best-preserved among them. Initially built in the mid-6th century along the Yan Mountains, the wall has witnessed over 150 battles. With our world travel planner, Beijing attractions like The Great Wall of Gubeikou can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

  • Great hike that was not too challenging. Most of the path was pretty safe. (Not too much climbing.) Walking poles are helpful.

  • Gubeikou is the Great Wall fortress between Shanhaiguan Pass and Juyongguan Pass. It is the throat of the Liaodong Plain and Inner Mongolia to the Central Plains. It has always been a battleground for military strategists, especially in the five dynasties of Liao, Jin, Yuan, Ming and Qing. The big and small battles for the Gubeikou have never stopped, so the role of the Great Wall has become particularly important. The Gubeikou Great Wall is composed of the Northern Qi Great Wall and the Ming Great Wall. It is the most complete Great Wall system in the history of the Great Wall of China.
