Temple of Heaven, Beijing

4.5
#3 of 3,889 in Parks in China
Dating back to the early 15th century, Temple of Heaven served the leaders of the Ming and Qing dynasties as the site of annual harvest prayer ceremonies. Regarded as a Taoist house of worship, the temple complex contains several structures, including a central prayer hall, an enormous triple-gabled structure intricately detailed on the outside and elaborated decorated on the inside. There, the emperors, traditionally considered interlocutors between mortals and gods, performed rituals to request the blessing for successful harvests. • This was my favorite temple visited in Beijing because it was slightly different architecture than all the others which seemed to all be quite similar. Easy to reach by the metro and close to the pear...  more »
  • Can't imagine beauty here. Grandeur. Horizontal terrace. And brave. Understanding more about the culture of the Chinese nation

  • Nice park to walk around in. A lot of things cost extra money even if you buy the all inclusive ticket, and most things are really just interesting if you are really, really interested in temples as most are closed and you just can look inside through a small window. The only thing might be the big temple on the hill, but that is only worth it on the few days where there isn't smog in Beijing and you can enjoy the view. So maybe just spend the 15 yuan for a nice walk in the park and buy some ice cream instead of spending it for the fees. Nice, clean toilets.
  • The Temple of Heaven was a beautiful sight. The ascent up the stairs is amazing, and there are so many opportunities for amazing photos. The colors of the temple are vibrant, and the attention to detail is jaw dropping. The Temple of Heaven is a staple of Chinese history and culture. I would definitely say this is a must-see if you are in Beijing!
  • Dot on the map is off slightly. It's to the east of the dot. Nice main temple with several buildings on the side. There is an entrance fee for the whole park as well. Tip: If limited on time, definitely do summer palace first. Can easily spend an entire day there with the mountain embedded temples and the huge lake view and the boat rides and the stroll along the lake coast. Not that Sumer temple is bad but it doesn't hold a candle to summer palace. It's like comparing Portland to New York.
  • Beautiful big temple where ceremonies and prayers for good harvest have been performed. All roofs in the temple are blue (not yellow as usual). The temple is built to represent symbolism of connection of Earth and Heaven with squares, representing the Earth, and circles as Heaven. Also, the symbolism of number nine, representing the Emperor also visible. There are three main constructions: the Hall of prayer for Good Harvests, where Emperor would pray. It's the circular construction on the marble stone. The second is The Imperial Vault of Heaven, built inside the Echo Wall. If two persons standing in opposite sides of the wall, they can hear each other speak. The third is the Circular Mound Altar, platform on three levels built of marble stone. The temple is surrounded by magnificent park, people walking, playing cards and board games, and socializing. The East Gates of the temple are easy to reach by Subway No. 5. Across the street is the famous Pearl Market, popular with tourists. It is possible to buy the ticket only for the park, or a ticket for the park and the temple. The park ticket is 15 RMB, while combo ticket is 34 RMB in peak season.
  • Lovely park in Beijing to visit and just wander around. Tickets are priced to just enter the park or get a through ticket (prices vary during seasons Y28 in March) that gives you entry into 3 of the buildings too including the Halls. It's less busy than the Forbidden City which makes it more spacious to wander about. You can find locals sitting on the benches playing cards or smoking. Connect to the heavens and make inner peace with yourself and the universe here!
