#7 of 59 in Nature in Beijing
Kunming Lake is the central lake on the grounds of the Summer Palace in Beijing, China. Together with the Longevity Hill, Kunming Lake forms the key landscape features of the Summer Palace gardens. With an area of 2.2km2, Kunming Lake covers approximately three quarters of the Summer Palace grounds. It is quite shallow, with an average depth of only 1.5m.HistoryKunming Lake is a man-made lake. Its predecessors were called Wengshan (Jar Hill) Pond and Xihu Lake. They were reservoirs which had been used as sources of water both for the city and irrigation of fields over a period of 3,500 years. Guo Shoujing, a famous astronomer and engineer in his time, developed it into a reservoir for the capital of the Yuan Dynasty in 1291. The conversion of the area into an imperial garden was commissioned by the Qianlong Emperor with the work being carried out between 1750 and 1764. In the course of creating the gardens, the lake area was extended by a workforce of almost 10,000 laborers. In the year 1990 and 1991, the Beijing Municipal Government undertook the first dredging of the lake in 240 years. A total of 652600m3 of sludge were removed in the work. 205 Japanese bombs dropped during the Sino-Japanese War were also found.

  • From Nishiyama (Dragon Gate) along the streets of Kunming. Kunming Lake. So soon you can see from above, unfortunately water is contaminated. And now, desperately promotes purification; Thus, in an area (the area that promotes the purification) separated by water can clean. Seemed like a challenge in civilization was unavoidable.

  • Kunming Lake is a most attractive water feature a short distance from downtown Beijing, where it covers three quarters of the total area of the Summer Palace grounds. By virtue of Beijing’s topographical location, with a gradient sloping down from the northwest to the southeast, the lake is situated at the convergence of the hills and a plain. The ground water level gives rise to a number of natural springs that formed the embryo of what ultimately was to become this fine ornamental lake.
  • They offer boat tour rides here, but only in Chinese...
  • The green lake... don't forget to take the 360 photos or video and share to your google maps or your social media
  • A wonderful contrast to the city
  • There is also usually a Saziergang at the Kunming Lake during a tour of the summer palace. You should take absolutely time for a hike or a boat ride on the Lake. A half to a full day can go on it already. Many very nice photo motifs. Be sure if available, take extreme wide angle, super details to be strong tele find. The indoor photography is often forbidden, but with high isozahl without Flash "unintended" good shots succeed. Super shots with people!
