Guijie, Beijing

3.1
#212 of 1,017 in Things to do in Beijing
Get a taste for busy Beijing life at Guijie. Dozens of restaurants stretch along the street, with most staying open all night. Taste the local cuisines from various provinces to see the delicious differences in culture. Walk under the red lanterns that line the entire street, which got its name from the spooky atmosphere created by oil lamps of food vendors during the Qing dynasty (1644-1911). Sit back and enjoy your meal at the city’s busiest eating area, and soak in the lively nightlife culture. • We had heard that Gui Jie, or Ghost Street, would be a lively and exciting place to visit in the evening in Beijing and to grab a bit to eat. Whilst we did not expect it to be the same as some picture...  more »
  • Small eating mile with the possibility of overpriced Scorpions, snake skin and all possible insects to eat. In the evening always very full and noisy. Unfortunately, it smells even in every corner very strictly for old grease and undefinierbarem. You can go through 10 minutes here, should expect but not too much.

  • This place is great for someone with an iron gut who eats anything and everything. I can’t do tongue, rabbit head, bull frog, gizzards etc which are galore on these menus (when I could read them) the ...  more »

  • All the red lanterns that used to line the streets are no longer there. It is now just a street filled with similar restaurants.
  • From this point and for the next two major blocks (going west), is what's called GuiJie, which is bascially a restaurant street. It's great to get dinner, but not such a great place to walk around. Pretty dead in the afternoon, and only really comes alive at night for dinner.
  • Fantastic night life of Beijing - a definite must-see.

Where to stay in Beijing

Beijing offers accommodations to suit the needs of every traveler, with clean, affordable hostels open to foreign backpackers, practical mid-range hotels for the business trip and group tour, and luxury four- and five-star hotels available at reasonable prices. Look for location first: map your overnight accommodations to the attractions you want to see, because staying far from the central business district and city center can mean a lot of time in transit.
