Back Lakes (Hou Hai), Beijing
(4.2/5 based on 1,200+ reviews on the web)
Catch a glimpse of a fading past at Back Lakes (Hou Hai), one of the capital's few remaining bastions of traditional residential architecture and a local favorite for enjoying the outdoors. Head for this historic neighborhood and enjoy a leisurely stroll around the lakes. You can get in some solid people watching as you explore, as the area generally fills with old folks, students, and fishermen indulging in the fresh lake air. The surrounding streets boast an array of cafes and nightlife establishments, so you can refresh with a drink on a patio followed by raucous karaoke. Rickshaws make for one of the more convenient methods of sightseeing--flag down a driver and go for a ride around the neighborhood streets. Keep your eyes peeled for "hutongs," residences that epitomize local architecture with their courtyards and grand entry gates. Using our custom trip planner, Beijing attractions like Back Lakes (Hou Hai) can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • Visit the evening, only a few restaurants remain open. Besides the stores are closed. Nothing special, only light and river in the night. Quiet location with a short walk

  • Visited the area as our hotel is nearby. We went on a nice cold evening which made the experience more pleasant I think. The area is filled with restaurants, bars and little cute shops. We were here a...  more »
  • It is the place par excellence of the Chinese party. Is the contrary of Sanlitun, where the party is focused to the foreigners. HouHai karaokes and bars inside with performances by dancers and streapers, is a place quite expensive and frequented only by Chinese and tourists during the afternoon, once it is at night, bars are filled until they burst, prices increase and is almost impossible to enjoy. Since everything is in Chinese and the music it is nothing special. Highly recommend going here in the afternoon, the terraces of the bars in the attics are open and you can enjoy a beautiful sunset. Hou Hai is surrounding a beautiful Lake, it is a very romantic area if they avoided the nights. It is very close to the most impressive hutongs of Beijing. I think that it is a great choice if you are visiting on the 4, 5 and 6 pm.
