798 Art Zone, Beijing
(4.2/5 based on 1,700+ reviews on the web)
Located in a decommissioned military factory, 798 Art Zone represents a Bauhaus-style hub for the city's thriving artistic community. Although initially frowned upon by the Communist government, the avant-garde movement flourished within this cheap and ample workshop space, which gradually started to attract visitors and bohemians to observe the modern artistic accomplishments. Inside, you can visit many repurposed facilities, including the photo gallery, an Italian and a French café, and a Sichuan restaurant, as well as space for press conferences, fashion shows, and exhibitions. You can always ask for guide service during your visit. Work out when and for how long to visit 798 Art Zone and other Beijing attractions using our handy Beijing vacation route planner.

  • The former industrial site built by the Germany of the is located to the North is Beijing, converted into artistic area, worth a visit by a non rainy afternoon. There are indeed a lot of statues, beautiful graffiti and large outdoor murals. Art galleries are numerous (indoors), as well as fashion (clothes and trendy modern objects). There are also a number of friendly cafes, quiet, with a pleasant setting, where you can enjoy tea or a beer. An afternoon stroll is very doable. (Down to the subway Jiangtai, line 14, exit A)

  • Who wants an idea of the many different facets of this fascinating city, the can't miss the 798 district. Although the neighbourhood, a former industrial zone, now no real place in the subculture is more, this collection of galleries, art institutions, craftsmen and restaurants is time and time again exciting. The creative mix attracts an appropriate audience, to get an impression of the young modern generation. And the displayed exhibits are usually boom and give an insight into the art scene of the city and China's. A visit in the 798 can be combined also with a detour to the also-based Goethe Institute, for which renowned architects Albert Speer AS + P + partners from Frankfurt has transformed a former industrial Hall.
