Caleta Portales, Valparaiso

3.7
A small cove with a big seafood culture, Caleta Portales serves as the home to many fisherman, catching and selling fresh produce daily. Find the markets just by the ocean where fisherman line their old and colourful boats side by side selling their daily catch. If you don't feel like cooking your own, try one of the many tasty restaurants that exist in the adjacent towns. Stroll down the seaside boulevard or pier and keep an eye out for seals, as they hang around the shore and will be extra friendly if you have fish. • Caleta Portales is a site recognized in Valpo to eat fish. Fairly neglected their environment, it offers a parking very expensive, as in the most exclusive areas of Santiago. Very dirty environment and wooden structures with an advanced state of deterioration, where fitness becomes imminent. They charge for passing to a dock where ought to be not only free because it offers more than contemplation. Or do said that the donation is for the fishermen. Metro station while it has ramps for wheelchair users, connectivity with the outside space of restaurants is appalling. A place that promises more than it shows.

  • Good merchandise and variety of fish and shellfish, the entire complex is unfortunately very bad care

  • A pleasant surprise I had when visiting Valparaiso was the Caleta Portales I discovered when passing the subway on the way to Vina del Mar, leaving the station you're already in the Caleta Portales and walk around the whole area feel the mood of the sea. Good for a walk in the late afternoon, yielding many pictures

  • Valparaíso - A real germ in Chile, should spend a night here, it's more interesting then staying in the city. cafes, designer shops and of course real stunning Graffiti everywhere!
  • rico seviche
  • Popular beach with 6-7 restaurants. Waves can be a bit too rough for swimming but perfect for sun bathing or have a meal.
  • In fact this fishermen village is not the best place to have lunch, unless you want to eat in a humble but popular place in Valparaíso. In my personal opinion I rather go to the hills when I want to eat good food at a fair price. But if you are in the mood of stay in this area and have a seat for lunch, I suggest you "El rey del pescado frito" and ask for "merluza frita con ensalada chilena"(deep fried hake with tomato and onion salad). That is a great dish for less than USD 6!!!
  • Affordable prices. The best seafood. Easy to get and parking space. Only you need to arrive early in the morning.

Where to stay in Valparaiso

Since its inscription on the World Heritage List in 2002, Valparaiso tourism has experienced a meteoric rise. The city now offers a wide range of accommodations, especially budget hostels and mid-range hotels and inns. Cerro Alegre, a hill just to the west of the city center, offers perhaps the largest range of options and looks out over the bustling port. Stay in the friendly neighborhood of Cerro Concepcion to enjoy the best of Valparaiso's cafe culture.
