Landmark Tourist Spot
Ride to the top of Ascensor Polanco, the only vertical elevator in Valparaiso. Situated on Polanco Hill, the lift first takes you through a 150 m (493 ft) tunnel, before ascending the 60 m (197 ft) tower. Inaugurated in 1916, the scenic elevator is now a National Monument of Chile. From the top of the tower you can enjoy encapsulating views of Valparaiso and take postcard-worthy photographs of the colorful vistas. Descend the Cerro Polanco on foot to see the brightly painted murals and graffiti that grace the walls of the hilly neighborhood. Where to stay in Valparaiso

Since its inscription on the World Heritage List in 2002, Valparaiso tourism has experienced a meteoric rise. The city now offers a wide range of accommodations, especially budget hostels and mid-range hotels and inns. Cerro Alegre, a hill just to the west of the city center, offers perhaps the largest range of options and looks out over the bustling port. Stay in the friendly neighborhood of Cerro Concepcion to enjoy the best of Valparaiso's cafe culture.

  • Didn't realize it was an elevator until after I got out of the elevator, but the walk through the tunnel was pretty neat. It felt like we were in a cave with a nice walkway.  more »
