One of the attractions of Valparaíso are lifts distributed in various parts of the city. Go to the city and do not walk in at least 1 is almost impossible if you really want to know Valparaíso. The reason for being there is the inclination of the hills. Many places in the city are inaccessible by public transport and by foot climb is difficult in some cases (not counting leave you almost exhausted). For this reason, elevators serve communicate the high and low part of the city. The artillery lift was opened in 1893 and is the one with the best visual panoramic port. Part of the city down from Praza Weelwright and arrives at the promenade May 21 and is main access to who is going to the Naval Museum and Valparaiso maritime. About the a craft fair, some cafes and a restaurant. It traverses 175mts and reach 50 m in height in a 30 ° slope. Paid 300 pesos for each route of ascent and descent, but definitely worthwhile by sight and fatigue prevented on the rise.

He is indeed not the steepest the Ascensores in Valparaiso, but this one has spectacular views from its upper end. Looking over the Bay. In clear even to the Aconcagua.

Years back I have been on a bicycle tour throughout Chile. Some days I spent at Valparaiso. Isn't it the city of Cabrillo the seafarer? Interesting environment. Good scenic views. I remember when I have been touring around, what a lady said to me: "you came down this hill? Which road you have taken?". I pointed on it and she replied: "this is a safe road. One road further and you wouldn't' be here"... See pictures! Nevertheless a must see place.

It's a bit more rickety than others, but it's one of the longest rides and biggest cars. I love these in Valpo!

Nice view of city, waterfront and the ascensor. Pay to ride up and then walk down the nearby street.

Built in 1893, this ascensor is the longest and most pictured. The twin ascensores take you to/from Plaza Aduana & Paseo 21 de Mayo then you can head to Museo Maritime Nacional. Lots of souvenir shops and great view. $300 one way

Where to stay in Valparaiso

Since its inscription on the World Heritage List in 2002, Valparaiso tourism has experienced a meteoric rise. The city now offers a wide range of accommodations, especially budget hostels and mid-range hotels and inns. Cerro Alegre, a hill just to the west of the city center, offers perhaps the largest range of options and looks out over the bustling port. Stay in the friendly neighborhood of Cerro Concepcion to enjoy the best of Valparaiso's cafe culture.
