  • This funicular railway is the longest of Valparaiso, with an incredible view of the city, featuring crafts, restaurants and the nautical Museum of Chile, inevitable.

  • The Ascensor (funicular) Artillería is a must. It will enable you to have a general view of the port of Valparaíso and also have a walk around the streets of the upper hills of the city.  more »
  • Climbing in the Artillería elevator is obligation for those who visit Valparaíso. The price is very accessible (to the rededor of $300) and allows access to the paseo 21 de may, from where you can see the port best. Stalls with crafts are climbing. First it scares a little, since the old lift is, is made of wood and at the start of the March creaks all. Only cons are the surroundings, which are not very safe, especially when it gets dark.

  • Years back I have been on a bicycle tour throughout Chile. Some days I spent at Valparaiso. Isn't it the city of Cabrillo the seafarer? Interesting environment. Good scenic views. I remember when I have been touring around, what a lady said to me: "you came down this hill? Which road you have taken?". I pointed on it and she replied: "this is a safe road. One road further and you wouldn't' be here"... See pictures! Nevertheless a must see place.
  • It's a bit more rickety than others, but it's one of the longest rides and biggest cars. I love these in Valpo!
  • Nice view of city, waterfront and the ascensor. Pay to ride up and then walk down the nearby street.
  • Built in 1893, this ascensor is the longest and most pictured. The twin ascensores take you to/from Plaza Aduana & Paseo 21 de Mayo then you can head to Museo Maritime Nacional. Lots of souvenir shops and great view. $300 one way

Where to stay in Valparaiso

Since its inscription on the World Heritage List in 2002, Valparaiso tourism has experienced a meteoric rise. The city now offers a wide range of accommodations, especially budget hostels and mid-range hotels and inns. Cerro Alegre, a hill just to the west of the city center, offers perhaps the largest range of options and looks out over the bustling port. Stay in the friendly neighborhood of Cerro Concepcion to enjoy the best of Valparaiso's cafe culture.
