Museo Nacional Ferroviario Pablo Neruda de Temuco, Temuco

4.2
#2 of 15 in Things to do in Temuco
Now a historic railway museum, Museo Nacional Ferroviario Pablo Neruda de Temuco once operated as the most important railway center for steam locomotives. Walk around the locomotive yard where 14 classic trains sit elegantly presented in pristine condition. The yard also features a selection of luxurious train carts that old Chilean prominent figures used to ride-- see if you can find the secret door in the presidential cart. The former administration office has been transformed into an art gallery where a model railroad sits as the centrepiece. The name of the museum honors Pablo Neruda, a Chilean writer who lived in Temuco while his father worked at the center. • I went with many expectations, and although it is a full Museum, missing a bit of information for tourists (some rail vehicles were simply scattered along the beach), and I had the misfortune of visiting him in moments when the machine shed was in reforms

  • Rarely a museum has disturbed so me back left... In General, should be the focus of a railway museum on the presentation of railroad technology, is here but somehow not quite. That may go to still the Museum adorned with the name Pablo Neruda, Neruda grew up in Temuco and his father was a train driver, however the person of Neruda and his poetry in the foreground of the exhibition are available on long distances... Furthermore are cats in the exhibition photographs by z.B. Why? Very confusing! The exhibits that actually have to do with railway are unfortunately a good part in a pitiful state, either not or only partially restored. There are also items in cars that there simply don't belong - chemistry camping toilet in passenger cars from 1923? The highlight of the Museum, the locomotive shed with a turntable, was not accessible during my visit because of extensive construction work, the exhibits were therefore rather unloving lined up on 2 tracks in the outdoor area. All in all a confusing, disturbing museum visit...

Where to stay in Temuco

Budget options can be hard to come by in Temuco, unless you're willing to stay in the busy and noisy area near the main train station. For something cleaner, larger, and more secure, consider the districts between the main square and the university, where you can stay comfortably without breaking the bank. Pricier hotels in the city center offer all the modern amenities and provide free shuttles to the airport.
