Santuario de la Inmaculada Concepcion, Santiago

4.5
#2 of 38 in Historic Sites in Santiago
A commanding statue of the Virgin Mary dominates the landscape at Santuario de la Inmaculada Concepcion. Built in 1904 to commemorate the 50-year anniversary of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception, the 12 m (39 ft) statue stands on a site sacred to the indigenous prior to colonialism. Visit the church to admire its stone architecture, and step inside to look for several murals and statues. From the top of the hill, you can see over all Santiago and even to the snow-capped Andes. Take a hike up the hill to get there, or for an easier time ascending or descending, ride the funicular or hire a cab. For travelers who use our international travel planner, Santiago holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Santuario de la Inmaculada Concepcion and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

The walk to reach the sanctuary can be done in several ways: by car, walking, cycling, or cable car funicular. For lovers of run/walk or bike, I recommend the defendant of these forms. The path is well signposted, but shared between everyone, even con the cars. There are also exclusive dirt roads for a bike. For those who want a shorter ride, the cool thing is get on funicular or cable car. The cable cars are quite old and fun. Along the way you can have a good view of the city. The funicular railway makes a stop at about the halfway point, who is going to the Zoo, which is also located in the Park. Already the cable car is too new and overlooks much more of the city and the mountains. He also makes a stop, but not to go to the Zoo, but down in a mirador. Some people take advantage to finish the climb. Pay attention to the sections purchased. Buy from below until the top is cheaper and you can get off at the middle station, walk, take pictures and take the cable car to finish the climb. In the sanctuary, the view is spectacular and the environment of prayer, at the foot of the image of the Virgin, make everything more beautiful. There's a gift shop, a small kiosk with fast food and the famous ' Mote con Huesillo ', considered one of the best of Santiago. Recommend the ascent in one day right after a day of rain, which leaves the city much cleaner. Unfortunately it doesn't rain much in Santiago, so do not miss the tour because there rained, but know that the pollution of the city will be quite visible.

After going up by Funicular (cable car), take the stairs still higher, to reach the Shrine. The view from there is sensational and, if the day is open, you can make some really cool photos of the mountain range.

Long walk to the top is worth it for the view. Try to go on a day with less smog/haze.
