History Museum Museum
Occupying the former palace, National Museum of History covers the time period from the European discovery of the Americas to the colonial era, through independence and into the modern era. A full 18 rooms recount Chile's history, exhibiting various collections of objects from everyday life and artwork, including portraits of important figures such as Ferdinand Magellan--the first to explore southern and western Chile. See women's clothing, sewing machines, and furniture. The final section addresses the coup that brought Augusto Pinochet to power and features a sobering display of Salvador Allende's broken glasses. Take an English audio guide, since the all information is in Spanish. Arrange to visit National Museum of History and other attractions in Santiago using our Santiago itinerary planner.

  • You can track much of Chilean history in this museum. Admission is free, has a very big hit and worth too much.

  • We had scheduled the visit but we decided to go and was quite interesting. Pay only a quarter to keep the bags. In the Museum we were approached by a museum guide asked us if we were interested in climb to the top where you have the clock. It was super interesting. During the ascent the Guide explained the whole history of the construction of the Museum, showed parts hit by the last great earthquake, clock, etc.. Finally we get to the top where the clock and have a beautiful view of the Plaza de Armas and Cathedral of Santiago.

  • Really beautiful museum. It's worth going there if you have a free time of 2 to 3 hours. Also most of the museums in Chile are closed on Mondays.
  • Great little museum. Very affordable English Audio Guide available at the entrance if you do not speak Spanish. Go to the top of the tower for a good view of Plaza de Armas and the Cathedral.
  • I'm sure this would be a great musuem if you can read Spanish. No English for gringos like me.
  • I'm sure it's a very informative museum if you can read Spanish. Little point going if you can't.
  • Museum, as it should be - perfectly maintained expositions with interactive materials, detailed audioguide in a multiple languages, shows in the courtyard (traditional dances, etc.). Highly recommended!
