(4.5/5 based on 480+ reviews on the web)
Housed in a grand neoclassical building with an imposing facade of columns and arches, National Library (Biblioteca Nacional) houses over six million volumes of books and manuscripts. Step inside to behold the diverse interior decoration of the early 20th-century building. Dark reading rooms with heavy wooden paneling contrast the central hall, which has an Internet section separated by modern glass walls. Walk through whitewashed halls with skylights and climb marble staircases holding on to handrails of wrought iron. If you need to rest, an atrium with a coffee stand serves refreshments and light meals.
