National Library (Biblioteca Nacional), Santiago

4.5
Housed in a grand neoclassical building with an imposing facade of columns and arches, National Library (Biblioteca Nacional) houses over six million volumes of books and manuscripts. Step inside to behold the diverse interior decoration of the early 20th-century building. Dark reading rooms with heavy wooden paneling contrast the central hall, which has an Internet section separated by modern glass walls. Walk through whitewashed halls with skylights and climb marble staircases holding on to handrails of wrought iron. If you need to rest, an atrium with a coffee stand serves refreshments and light meals. The main tip is don't settle for the first floor of the library: be curious and get higher. The day I was my husband was tired and said he didn't want to go any higher. Stubborn, rs, I went alone, but it was so worth it when I called to go up he was upset but then thanked me! There are some huge rooms with an old style private library, each january 1 famous writer and personal items with them. The only thing is that up there is pretty quiet, then put the phone on mute and quiet! lol ...

Hidden gem. This national Library was built in a historic building completed in 1925 although its history traces to nineteenth century. Extensive collections include Chile's first newspaper. There is an English speaking information desk. A small section of the library contains children books. Worth a short visit after visiting Santa Lucia

Due to the crowds and the name in Spanish, you don't realize that you are walking past it initially, so watch out. Try to take a moment to stop and take it all in. Venture inside and you'll experience it in all its grandeur.
